7-year-old girl killed in fire in Norwich

NORWICH, CT (WFSB) – A child died in a house fire in Norwich on Tuesday.

Fire investigators say they are working to determine the cause of a deadly fire on Summit Street.

City services received multiple 911 calls around 5:25 p.m. and emergency crews arrived within three minutes to find a two-story home engulfed in flames.

That’s when crews learned a child was still trapped in the house.

The fire brigade quickly arrived and rescued the girl from the second floor.

She was rushed to Backus Hospital for emergency treatment, but despite attempts to save her she later died.

“When we have reports of the child, it’s a nightmare,” said Chief Tracy Montoya of the Norwich Fire Department. “The vast majority of us have children or grandchildren of our own, and we know how important it is to get there as quickly as possible.”

The girl’s mother and her two siblings – a five-year-old brother and a 12-year-old sister – were at home when the fire broke out and managed to escape safely.

The mother was treated for smoke inhalation and is expected to recover.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Norwich and State Fire Marshal Office and the deceased victim has still not been identified.

The school district’s superintendent was notified and grief counselors will be available to students at the school on Wednesday.
