GREEN BAY – Before signing veteran Brandon McManus, Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst said he had a conversation about allegations of sexual abuse and harassment that threatened the kicker’s NFL future.

Gutekunst declined to share details about what he called “a very good conversation” with McManus before signing Tuesday night, including whether he asked McManus directly about the allegations, but said he was comfortable with his decision to send the controversial kicker to the Packers locker room.

“He wouldn’t be available if it weren’t for those allegations,” Gutekunst said, “but I think the league did a very thorough investigation, and we leaned on that as we went through it.”

Gutekunst said the Packers’ own investigation into McManus’ legal situation was “connected” with the league. Asked whether his vetting led Gutekunst to believe the charges against McManus would not hold up, Gutekunst declined to provide details about why he felt comfortable with the signing.

“I’m not going to go into a lot of details,” Gutekunst said, “but we feel very comfortable with the acquisition.”

McManus is a 10-year veteran who spent most of his career with the Denver Broncos but started last season with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He was accused of assaulting and harassing two flight attendants during the Jaguars’ overseas trip to London last season. According to a lawsuit, the two flight attendants said the flight “turned into a party pretty quickly” after takeoff, and McManus was accused of violating the flight attendants’ personal space, air safety and federal law.

McManus was accused of trying to kiss a flight attendant while she was seated during the flight and grinding into her twice while she was serving meals on board. The lawsuit also alleged that McManus recruited three other flight attendants for the party and handed out $100 bills to encourage them to drink and dance inappropriately.

A Florida court judge dismissed the lawsuit in early September, granting a request from McManus’ attorney for the plaintiffs to reveal their names in the lawsuit. The lawsuit was quickly refiled, but the NFL determined in late September that there was “insufficient evidence” that McManus had violated the NFL’s conduct policy and that the kicker was free to sign with another team.

McManus has denied the allegations from the start.

The Packers released rookie kicker Brayden Narveson to clear a spot on their roster for McManus. Narveson was cleared off waivers by the Tennessee Titans before Week 1, but made just 12 of 17 punts and missed a kick in four of his first six games, including a 44-yarder Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals. Each of Narveson’s missed kicks were within 50 yards.

Gutekunst said he believes Narveson will be a good NFL kicker down the road, but his inconsistencies have been a problem for a team looking to compete this season.

“He’s a very skilled kicker,” Gutekunst said of McManus, who has made 81.4% of his 311 career field goal attempts. “He has been in very high-pressure situations and has been kicking for a long time in an all-weather open-air stadium. So he just has a lot of experience, very talented, very gifted, very strong legs. So he’s been in the fire, he’s had the ups and downs that all kickers go through, and he’s come out the other side.”
