Frustrated resident demands action as illegal dumping piles up on Old Gentilly Road

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – An Old Gentilly Road resident calls the illegal dumping along his street downright dangerous and is urging the city and NOPD to take action.

“They keep throwing garbage. They’re going to keep littering, they’re not going to stop,” said owner Stephen Plessy.

Frustrated, Plessy says he has endured piles of trash and discarded tires near his home for years.

“This has been going on for a long, long, long time,” Plessy said.

To document the problem, Plessy records videos and photographs and notes that he has filed repeated complaints.

“I went to City Hall, to the sanitation department. I told them,” Plessy explained.

Illegal dumping has been a problem in this area and nearby New Orleans East for years. Two years ago, a FOX 8 drone captured a staggering amount of tires along the I-510 service road, prompting the state Department of Transportation to step in and clean up the debris.

In 2019, Old Gentilly Road was crammed with piles of tires, making it nearly impossible for vehicles to pass.

Now, Plessy says, the situation has only gotten worse.

“Mosquitoes. They have that infestation back there and people just go back there doing the things they’re doing,” Plessy said.

He added that on his property people have thrown away sofas, living room games and general trash.

Regarding the recall, Plessy explains: “My truck. I have to get rid of it, I have to take care of it.”

Recently, he found an entire trailer dumped on his property, including household items and even personal photographs.

We contacted the city to ask if and when the trash will be cleaned up. The city says there is a delay. Sanitation crews are currently addressing July cleanup requests, but hope to address the Plessy area soon.

Plessy thinks she knows what will happen next.

“The city will come back here and they will clean it up again. But why keep doing the same thing? “Put some cameras here or something,” he said.

The decision to install cameras rests with the Real Time Crime Center, with input from the NOPD. An NOPD spokesperson confirmed they have reached out to district leaders to see if there are plans to install cameras on Old Gentilly Road, although a response is pending.

For Plessy, the fight is to preserve his quality of life.

“I love New Orleans and I’ve been here a long time, and I’m trying to make it better,” he said.

The state transportation department has stated that if tires are discarded closer to the interstate, they will take care of the cleanup. But for now, responsibility for this part of Old Gentilly Road falls to the city.
