Man shot to death at northwest Fresno apartment complex identified

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — A man died after gunshots were heard inside a quiet apartment complex in a gated community in northwest Fresno early Friday morning.

“There are a lot of little kids in all these complexes around here. That’s very scary,” said neighbor Anjanae Freitas.

Shortly after midnight, Fresno police responded to shots fired at the Windscape Apartments on Nees, near Poplar Avenue.

When officers arrived, they found Tyler Hamon, 33, with a single gunshot wound to the back.

Police say there were other people inside the apartment when bullets came through the front door.

“We found shell casings on the top landing and bullet holes in the front door,” said Fresno Police Lt. Paul Cervantes.

Five shots were fired, shocking the densely populated community.

“It just sucks that we have family living here. A lot of us want to know we can come home and I have to worry about anything that happens while we sleep,” said resident Christian Reynaga.

Police say Hamon had an extensive criminal history.

This shooting is believed to be gang related.

“Our victim has more connections to Tulare County. He had a prior arrest for domestic violence, some prior weapons and evading charges that were dropped,” said Lt. Cervantes.

Neighbors say this is not the only incident that has occurred at the complex in recent weeks.

“There was a drug bust here and then across the street, I guess other things were going on,” Reynaga said. “Three things in a two-week span. I think I wish this would stop.”

CSI patrol cars and vans were at the scene for hours, collecting evidence as the investigation continues.

“We have good evidence in this case that points us to some viable leads, but at this time we still have to make an identification,” said Lt. Cervantes.

This is the 27th murder in the city of Fresno compared to 26 this time last year.
