A recent day on Ayaz’s calendar explains why Bob Iger hand-picked the marketing wizard in 2023 to serve as the conglomerate’s first chief brand officer while continuing to oversee film and streaming series campaigns. This year, Disney is again at the top of the box office (including Inside out 2, Deadpool and Wolverine, Alien: Romulus), with moana 2 and mufase yet to come.

10:30 a.m. DO NOT RESERVE. If Ayaz knows a meeting may run out, he creates a pause. Since his 10am meeting covered Disney’s first D23 fan show in Latin America, he left room for overages as he didn’t want to keep his 11am meeting waiting.

Two of Ayaz’s key afternoon meetings (and one morning meeting) took place in the Pandora-themed conference room, a tribute to James Cameron. Avatar. Plans for other themed conference rooms were scrapped for fear they might be inconvenient for other filmmakers.

Margie Cohn

President, DreamWorks Animation

Acquired by NBCUniversal in 2016 from Jeffrey Katzenberg, DWA has taken some time to find its groove (complicated by the advent of streaming and the pandemic) within the sprawling conglomerate, which also owns rival Illumination Entertainment. But DWA is back in action (see below).

6am The day starts with coffee. The pot was installed the night before. About the first cup, please send an email and then complete The New York Times‘ Mini-Crossword and Connections as a reward.

7am Pilates or elliptical.

8am Travel to work while making family calls or listening the town podcast.

9am Arrive at the DreamWorks campus in Glendale, have breakfast at the police station; Enjoy a moment of quality chat. Breakfast talk topics: The wild robotwhich has been the biggest success of the fall, grossing more than 200 million dollars at the global box office, and kung fu panda 4which is among the most important films of the year.

10am TV Executive Team: Review all projects, including upcoming ones Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movieand discuss impending proposals with senior staff in the television division.

11am Weekend reading: Review scripts with the feature development team, discuss next steps with Kristin Lowe, Creative Director. “I have to look toward the future as well as work through everything that’s happening right now, this second,” Cohn says. “It takes a long time to make animated films. “We are looking at 2027, 2028 and 2029 right now.”

12 p.m. Digital newspaper room: Biweekly check-in with dog man production. The film is nearly finished (in theaters January 31, 2025), so Cohn is discussing the final lighting with director Peter Hastings, producer Karen Foster and production designer Nate Wragg.

13:00 Lunch at the DWA police station with Puss in Boots: The Last Wish co-directors Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado to talk about the progress of their upcoming (unannounced) original film.

2 p.m. Head across campus to Lakeside Annex to The bad guys 2 Design and animation review with director Pierre Perifel, co-director JP Sans and producer Damon Ross.

3 p.m. Universal marketing meeting to review creatives. Review printed art for dog man and revised trailer for The bad guys 2.

4 p.m. Business Matters: Review the status of feature offers, including casting.

5 p.m. Last event of the day: Head to the Lagoon (an outdoor venue on campus) to celebrate employees who have been at DreamWorks for 25 years. According to Cohn, fortunately there are quite a few.

6 p.m. Return calls, try to catch up on all the emails you missed during meetings. Cohn says it’s rare that she can catch up on email: “Sometimes I’m sitting in my office and 15 people come in one at a time. I have back-to-back bookings during the day, so they come.”

7 p.m. Head home.


Rachel Morrison

Filmmaker, director of photography

After becoming the first woman nominated for the Oscar for best photography in 2017 muddyMorrison met with Ryan Coogler; they had worked together on Fruitvale Station – do black panther. After that film, Morrison decided he wanted to change his focus. On December 25, her directorial debut, The inner firewill be released in theaters when Oscar season is in full swing.

8:30 a.m. Hot yoga.

10am General meeting with Nick Nesbitt and other executives at Scott Stuber’s United Artists, which Stuber is relaunching in partnership with Amazon MGM Studios, after seeing Nesbitt The inner fire. Morrison is reluctant to admit that gatherings have seen a dramatic increase since people started seeing each other. The inner firea biographical sports drama about American professional boxer Claressa “T-Rex” Shields, played by Ryan Destiny.

11am Stylist adapting to upcoming press events for The inner fire.

12am Meeting with executives from Hello Sunshine, Reese Witherspoon and Seth Rodsky’s company. Morrison knows Witherspoon because they worked together on The morning program (Morrison directed one episode.)

13:30 Panavision interview. So far, Morrison has enjoyed all the publicity. “It’s still exciting and fresh,” he says. “Ask me again in a month.”

2 p.m. Interview magazine interview.

3 p.m. BUST Magazine interview.

4 p.m. Interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

5 p.m. Son’s piano and guitar lesson.

7 p.m. Dinner at Manuela in downtown Los Angeles.

Filmmaker, producer

The prolific Chilean director and producer returns to the Oscar race this year with Mariahis ambitious Maria Callas biopic starring Angelina Jolie as the iconic opera diva. He continues to live in Chile, where he and his brother have a thriving production company.

8am Expresso Round 1. Larraín is rarely in Los Angeles and needs strong doses of caffeine after landing late the night before from London, where Maria premiered at the London Film Festival.

9am Call manager Eryn Brown to discuss scripts, schedule and incoming ideas.

9:30 a.m. Drive to Burbank.

10:15 a.m. He arrives in Burbank with his brother Juan de Dios and his business and production partner Juan de Dios Larraín to discuss an upcoming project with an actor. “Fabula Producciones is the production company that I founded with my brother in 2004 through which we produce films, television and commercials,” says Pablo. “All my films have been produced through Fabula, with my brother as producer. We currently have two films in post-production and four television shows in operation. We are also currently working on a big production for an American studio that I hope we can talk about soon.”

12 p.m. Mixing session with Los Bunkers, a famous and popular Chilean rock band whom Larraín recently filmed in Santiago. “We are doing an acoustic mix to their set, the classic MTV offline“, says.

2 p.m. The Fabula trio holds another actors’ reunion in Burbank.

3 p.m. Lunch: green salad and the last espresso of the day (strict rule).

4:30 p.m. Meeting with international writer/producer to discuss the best way to work together to improve a script you hope to collaborate on.

6:00 p.m. Try on the suit for MariaAFI Gala Premiere

6:05 p.m. Dinner. After eating, he says he relaxes from his day by calling his children in Chile and hearing about their days: “They know I’ll be back soon, thanks to them.”

10 p.m. Lie down with a book of poetry by any poet from Chile or Latin America, a land defined and described beautifully and essentially by its poetry.
