U.S. Senate Candidates Speak at Mississippi Economic Council’s Annual Hobnob Event

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – Both incumbent Republican Senator Roger Wicker and his Democratic rival Ty Pinkins are making their final pushes on the campaign trail. They took the stage at the Mississippi Economic Council’s annual Hobnob event.

Pinkins disagrees with Wicker’s support for Donald Trump and said he lacks personal courage.

“Mississippi deserves better,” Pinkins said of Wicker. “The current leadership we have in Washington DC has failed us. He has forgotten the people of Mississippi. “He has failed the people of Mississippi and he has failed the promise he made when he swore to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, internal and external.”

Wicker focused on the differences between a White House and Senate led by Republicans and Democrats. He added that he believes the Republican Party is ready to take back control.

“I believe you will see peace through strength. I believe we will see a continued reduction of the tax burden for people like you who want to create jobs for Mississippians and jobs for Americans… We are going to issue more permits for domestic drilling and we are going to allow the United States border patrol United continue to do your job again. “That’s what’s at stake.”

Pinkins questions Wicker not showing up at town halls and declining invitations to debates.

“He won’t show up to explain to Mississippians what he’s done.”

Wicker’s campaign staff designated a location for television reporters to schedule an interview, but they returned saying the senator had to leave. We were told there were no other interview opportunities for that day and asked us to email any questions.

Below is the response we received:

“The people of Mississippi know better than to believe these desperate, half-hearted accusations of a failed campaign so close to Election Day. Senator Wicker works in the best interest of all Mississippians every day he is in the Senate. Ty doesn’t really want to debate. “All of these so-called town halls were canceled before they actually occurred or were intentionally scheduled on dates when the U.S. Senate was in session and voting and therefore Senator Wicker was unable to attend,” said Nathan Calvert , Director of Communications.
