The St. Petersburg City Council voted Thursday to approve a pair of cleanup and restoration projects for the Tampa Bay Rays’ Tropicana Field in the wake of damage suffered during Hurricane Milton, according to the Associated Press.

Those contracts will cost the city about $6.5 million.

“We need to act quickly to protect the building from further damage,” City Manager Rob Gerdes said Thursday.

One of the contracts was awarded to BMS CAT for a sum of $3.9 million and the other to Hennessy Construction Services Corp. for $2.5 million.

The contracts were somewhat controversial, as the city already has plans to build a $1.3 billion baseball stadium by 2028, and some council members aren’t convinced this current cleanup plan makes sense in a building that will only be used for three others. years.

But Major League Baseball hopes to have a 2025 plan for the Rays by Christmas, with several minor league facilities or the ballpark at Disney’s ESPN Wide World of Sports in Orlando also a possibility.

“I have no idea yet, but diligence is still being done, formally and informally, at the stadium itself,” MLBPA executive director Tony Clark said. told reporters at the beginning of the week. “A determination will have to be made on whether adjustments can be made to that stadium in 2025, 2026 or later. In the short term, we have to make sure that if the facilities the Major League players are not going to Play in 2025 they will not “It’s a Major League stadium, it’s Major League quality the moment the players step on the field. That’s all in the works.”

The St. Petersburg City Council ultimately decided that approving the costs of Tropicana Field now made more sense, as opposed to possible expenses in the future.

“It’s about stopping the bleeding,” said council member Gina Driscoll. “It sounds like pay now or pay later and pay more later.”
