Gogebic County snowplows prepare for first snowfall

GOGEBIC COUNTY, Mich. (WLUC) – The Gogebic County Highway Commission has been preparing for the first snowfall since late September.

During the summer, many of the plow trucks are used to transport maintenance projects. That means plows need to be re-placed every fall. Currently, 18 of Gogebic County’s 20 plows are ready for winter.

Garth Stengard, director of the Gogebic County Highway Commission, said the first snowfall may be the most dangerous.

“Be careful,” Stengard said. “The first snow is always the most dangerous because the roads are slippery because the ground is still warm. Therefore, I think the traveling public should slow down and be careful.”

Stengard said last winter was a pleasant winter for the highway commission as snow plow drivers were not overworked or stressed. However, he acknowledges that the lack of snow was not good for the local economy.

For this year, the Gogebic County Highway Commission is fully staffed and ready for whatever winter brings.
