Judge: Man not yet competent to stand trial for stabbings and remain civilly committed – Albert Lea Tribune

Judge: The man is not yet competent to be tried for stabbings and remain civilly committed

A man who reportedly stabbed five people in two separate incidents in Albert Lea in 2022 was still found incompetent to stand trial after a recent psychological evaluation.

Freeborn County District Court Judge Ross Leuning in July 2023 ordered CK Kyle Kasio, 28, to be indeterminately civilly committed for being mentally ill and dangerous after he was found incompetent a few months earlier of being judged.

His case is reviewed periodically and Leuning ordered another evaluation at a hearing in September.

Leuning said an evaluation report was submitted on Oct. 20 indicating that Kasio, who is currently being treated in a forensic mental health program in St. Peter, has made minor but not significant progress. The report also concluded that Kasio remained incompetent to assist in his own defense or at trial.

According to the report, Kasio will continue in the program and the case will be reviewed again in six months after treating doctors provide another update, the judge stated.

Prior to his civil commitment, Kasio had been in the Freeborn County Jail since May 2022 after he allegedly stabbed three men while they slept at an apartment complex at 221 E. Main St. in Albert Lea. Two of the three victims were seriously injured and taken by helicopter to St. Marys Hospital.

One of the victims told police he woke up to the other victim being stabbed and then being stabbed himself. As he tried to flee, he was stabbed in the back of the shoulder, court documents state.
In the second incident, which occurred in December 2022, Kasio allegedly stabbed one inmate and then attempted to stab another while in jail.

Court records indicate the first inmate was sleeping in his bed when Kasio reportedly entered his cell and began hitting him. After a few hits, Kasio allegedly reached into his jumpsuit pocket and grabbed an orange Spork that had been sharpened and began stabbing the inmate. He received a stab wound in the right arm and three other stab wounds in the back of the head.

Kasio then reportedly left the cell and entered the common area, where he began punching a second inmate with a closed fist in the face and attempted to stab him as well, according to court documents.

Leuning said charges from both incidents will remain stayed while Kasio continues to work to restore his mental capacity.

The next review date is scheduled for 2 pm on April 30, 2025.
