Arizona Mills shooting is part of apparent dispute

A shooting at the Arizona Mills shopping center in September was part of an apparent “dispute,” Maricopa County Superior Court documents showed.

Three people captured by video surveillance were arrested on Tuesday in connection with the shooting, including a teenager.

The Republic does not name minors suspected of crimes.

According to court documents, Gabriel Garcia, 19, went to the mall after his half-brother, 16, called Garcia and told him a group of people were following him. Once Garcia arrived, he and his brother followed the group to the food court, and his brother confronted the group yelling, “Hey.” The younger brother began shooting at the group with a pistol.

GarcĂa followed his brother’s example and shot at the group with a previously hidden rifle. Garcia told police he saw two people from the group “catch up” first and couldn’t let anyone hurt his brother.

While surveillance video shows a member of the group grabbing his backpack, it is unclear if any member of the group had a gun or other weapon.

The two alleged shooters were arrested on charges of aggravated assault, endangerment, illegal discharge of a firearm and disorderly conduct. The teenager was also arrested for being a minor in possession of a firearm.

A third person, Marvin Hooks, 22, was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy. Hooks told police he was at the mall that night and surveillance cameras captured Hooks with the brothers, according to court documents.

In Garcia and Hooks’ probable cause statements, they stated in interviews that the shooting was part of an ongoing dispute between the trio and the group. The group had previously shot at Hooks’ residence, which was consistent with a Phoenix police report from May, the document states. The teen also claimed the group had shot him before.

The members of the group were not identified in the court report.

It was not apparent how the dispute began or whether the shooting at Hooks’ residence instigated the dispute.

No injuries were reported in the shooting at the crowded shopping center, although there was at least $500 in property damage.

Garcia and Hooks are being held at the Tempe City Jail.
