Jagtar Singh Johal: – BBC News

In May 2022, a panel of UN human rights experts concluded that Jagtar Singh Johal’s detention was arbitrary and he should be released.

He claims he was tortured in the first days of his detention, something Indian authorities have always denied.

Dan Dolan, advocacy and policy director at human rights organization Reprieve, said the new Labor government should “do better” than the previous Conservative administration.

He said: “Both the Foreign Minister and the Prime Minister took strong and principled positions on Jagtar’s case in the opposition, acknowledging that he is arbitrarily detained and saying that the government should seek his release.

“We ask you to deliver on those commitments. You have the opportunity to do better than the last government and bring Jagtar home to his family in Dumbarton.”

The Indian High Commission in London earlier said “due process” under Indian law was being followed in the case.

Earlier this year, a spokesperson said: “Mr Johal is facing criminal trials in no fewer than eight hate crime cases with charges relating to extremely serious offences, including terrorism crimes, conspiracy to murder and the ruthless killing of people. belonging to different religions.

He added: “As their cases are before the Indian courts, it is the courts that decide the next steps in their case, not the government of either country.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been asked for comment.
