Hughesville seeks grant for Lycoming County Fair | News, sports, jobs

RALPH WILSON/Sun-Gazette correspondent Olivia Funson of Unityville cares for her steer while performing night duties at the Lycoming County Fair on Tuesday, July 16, 2024.

The Hughesville City Council, at its recent meeting, agreed to apply for a state Local Shared Account grant for improvements to the Lycoming County Fairgrounds.

Eric Newcomer, who asked council to apply for the LSA grant, said it will go toward further improvements to the horse show ring.

“What we’re really looking for is to cover the sand.” The newcomer said. “We need a municipal sponsor.”

He told council he wants up to $1 million in funding and is reaching out to area municipalities for support.

Lycoming County Fair Association President Rocky Reed told the Sun-Gazette that a roof or cover for the ring, located near Gate 6, will make it a better place for spectators at the various events. that are celebrated there.

“There are events there that are canceled from time to time.” said.

In other matters, Reed noted that pesky flies from fair activities weren’t a big problem this year.

County residents in the past have complained of swarms of flies in the community during and in the weeks following the July fair.

Trash bins and farm animals displayed at the fair attract flies, many of which migrate throughout the community.

Reed said this year the fair changed its approaches to manure management and treatment.

“Anything you did made a big difference in the community.” Councilman Dan Gale told Reed.

The council voted to hold the township’s annual leaf drive from Nov. 4-27.

Council president Andrew Mook advised township officials to consider introducing some form of regulation regarding access roads.

He noted that over the years homeowners have cut sidewalks to create driveways without the municipality’s consent. The Council agreed to continue considering the matter.

Councilman Jerry Daugherty reported that he hopes to present the 2025 city budget at the next council meeting on Monday, November 11.
