Hearing on Various Motions in Karen Read Case Set for Today

DEDHAM − A judge today will consider a joint motion by prosecutors and the defense team for a new trial of karen read will be delayed until April 1, 2025.

Read is a Mansfield woman accused of killing her Boston police officer groom, John O’Keefe, native of Braintree.

Judge Beverly Cannone declared a mistrial in the case in July. He has scheduled a second trial to begin on January 27, 2025. The court confirmed last month that Cannone will oversee Read’s second trial.

Cannone, at today’s hearing, will also consider several motions filed by the defense, including one asking that Norfolk County District Attorney Michael Morrissey be ordered to turn over personal emails and cell phone data before the second trial. by Read.

Why they want to delay Karen Read’s retrial

The prosecution and defense filed a joint motion in Norfolk Superior Court earlier this month asking for the trial to be postponed.

“The joint application will give the Commonwealth and the defense sufficient time to prepare for trial, accommodate the schedule of new witnesses, including expert witnesses, allow expert witnesses to make timely evidence and disclosures prior to trial, and result in a more efficient presentation and simplified evidence by both parties,” the motion reads. The motion states that prosecutors plan to reanalyze the evidence and have hired a biomechanical engineer who is expected to testify at trial.

“These new Commonwealth experts are also expected to produce reports following testing and analysis, which the defense will need time to consider and potentially respond to, possibly with additional experts of its own,” the motion reads.

Defense Seeks DA’s Phone Records, Transcripts Seized in Read Trial

The defense filed several separate motions as Week, including one seeking personal emails and cell phone data from Norfolk County District Attorney Michael Morrissey.

The defense, in its motion, argues that Morrissey may have used his personal email and cell phone to communicate with Stoughton District Court staff and judges while Read’s case was pending in that court.

Karen Read charged with second-degree murder

Read was charged with second-degree murder, manslaughter while operating under the influence and leaving the scene of personal injury and death after O’Keefe’s body was found outside the Canton home of a fellow police officer. of Boston on January 29, 2022, during a snowfall. Prosecutors say Read was drunk and angry when she intentionally hit him, but Read’s defense attorneys say she was framed for O’Keefe’s death.

Read is also charged with drunk driving manslaughter and leaving the scene of personal injury and death. Norfolk District Attorney Michael Morrissey recently announced that he has appointed Special Assistant Prosecutor Hank Brennan to lead Read’s retrial.
