A classic of the big 5 | Daily sports bulletin

On Tuesday night, Philadelphia college basketball featured a pair of Big 5 matchups. First at Hawk Hill, where a gym was filled with cheering fans and a happy Billy Lange celebrating with them.

Because for the second year in a row, the St. Joseph men’s basketball team topped Villanova, 83-76, marking its first home win against the Wildcats since 2011. Both teams had something to prove in the rivalry matchup. Here’s why: Villanova fell to Columbia on Nov. 6 and St. Joe’s lost to Central Connecticut two days later.

While Villanova star Eric Dixon scored a game-high 24 points, the Hawks went on a 15-0 run to retake the lead in the second half. and finally secured victory.

Although St. Joe’s coach Lange downplayed the potential changing of the guard in the Big Five with his victory declaration, it’s clear the Hawks are no longer the little brother to rival Villanova.

Now, let’s go to North Broad, where a line filled Montgomery Avenue outside the student entrance at the Liacouras Center to watch Temple take on Drexel, who joined the Big 5 last season.

And fortunately for the home crowd, the Owls earned a 69-61 victory over the Dragons. extending their undefeated status to 3-0.

Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio certainly I saw something in Baun. The 27-year-old has been able to thrive in a new position and excel in pass coverage. And it’s certainly versatile: She grew up as a dancer and playing bass.

Tuesday began a trip that the 76ers hope will end in Las Vegas. While the Sixers’ home game against the New York Knicks was about the return of Joel Embiid, that matchup also served as the first NBA Cup opener for both teams. The tournament will be played on “Cup Nights,” with games taking place every Tuesday and Friday night from now until December 17, which is when the championship is played.

Upon his return to the court, Embiid looked rusty and struggled with fatigue in the Sixers’ 111-99 loss to the New York Knicks. The Sixers were led by Paul George’s 29 points.

Tuesday night’s game also featured plenty of new faces on both sides. While Embiid and George played their first game together, offseason additions Mikal Bridges and Karl-Anthony Towns played in their 10th game for the Knicks. “You have to fine-tune it and it takes time,” Knicks guard Josh Hart said after the game.

Answer to trivia time

Who led the Sixers in scoring average in 1982-83 when they won their last championship?

DO) Moisés Malone— tom l. He was the first to give the correct answer.

What you’re saying about the Sixers

We ask: Can the Sixers remain contenders this season? Among their responses:

It’s sad to say, but my interest in watching billionaires disappeared a long time ago and they only play half a season if we’re lucky. Gone are the days when players like Dr. J, Bobby Jones, Maurice Cheeks, Barkley, etc., put them on every game. Missed games due to legitimate injuries are one thing, but players needing rest days and situations like Paul George on a “minute count” are ridiculous. I understand that team owners today want to protect their multi-million dollar investments in these guys, but how about making sure they show up for the season fit and ready to play instead of planning to only play them half the season? season? I also have an investment to protect and that investment is what I do with my precious free time and unfortunately, watching the NBA is a losing proposition for me. — bob a.

In my youth I was always very excited about all of our Philadelphia teams, but now, in my mid-80s, I am much more cautious in my enthusiasm. I’m worried about this Sixers team and their chances of being among the best. Your trivia question this morning says it all. Julius Erving, Andrew Toney, Moses Malone and Maurice Cheeks, there was now a Sixers team for which there was no doubt. — Everett S.

So here’s our prediction on “Your 76ers”: They won’t make the playoffs. Probably one of the worst managed sports teams in the United States. We have full season tickets for the Eagles and Phillies. I was going to get a partial plan for the 76ers. I just couldn’t press the buy button. I went to the opening game. That cured us! We never, ever abandon a game early unless it’s a flop. Well, this game was not only a success but also a completely effortless outing. We left after the 3rd quarter. You have one more game and that is the Brooklyn game. Tickets to professional basketball are expensive. At least $100 per ticket for a decent seat. Our Phillies tickets are under $30 each for the infield, 200 on the level behind first base indoors. — Ron R.

“The goal, of course, is to have the Big Three healthy and active for the playoffs.” I don’t understand. Why are playoffs more important than season games? For the fans? — Juan T.
