Amsterdam police warn of calls for riots against Israelis after Maccabi Tel Aviv-Ajax soccer match

A senior police officer warned on Tuesday of calls for more unrest in Amsterdam, after dozens of people armed with sticks and firecrackers set a tram on fire on Monday night and the city faces tensions following last week’s violence. aimed at fans of an Israeli football club.

Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema asked the Israeli ambassador that officials in Israel make clear “that this is a sporting event and should not be mixed with politics.”

In the afternoon, social media posts became harsher and anti-Semitic terms were used.

After Ajax’s 5-0 win over Maccabi, parts of a large group of Maccabi supporters “are running around with sticks destroying things,” the document said.

There were also “rioters, moving in small groups, on foot, scooter or car, quickly attacking Maccabi fans before disappearing,” the City Hall timeline said.

The police commander said that these incidents had “an anti-Semitic character: there is talk of a hunt for Jews and people are asked about their nationality.” Then rumors arose about missing people and hostage-taking, which turned out to be unfounded.

Police said Monday’s fire was quickly extinguished and riot officers cleared the square. Images online showed people damaging property and setting off firecrackers.

A police vehicle was later set on fire on a nearby street and police said they suspected arson.

Police said it was unclear who started the riot and whether it was related to what happened last week. Some rioters could be heard in a video shared on social media using insults against the Jewish people.

Reports of anti-Semitic speech, vandalism and violence have been increasing in Europe since the start of the war in Gaza.

According to police, a total of eight people are detained in the investigation into last week’s violence, aged between 16 and 37, from Amsterdam and nearby cities.

Police said they have identified more than 170 witnesses and taken forensic evidence from dozens. The prime minister said they were also examining videos posted on social media.

The mayor banned all demonstrations in the city and declared several parts of Amsterdam risk zones where the police can stop and control anyone.

Dozens of people were arrested on Sunday for participating in a pro-Palestinian demonstration in the center of Amsterdam that had been outlawed.

Police ended a small demonstration Tuesday outside Amsterdam City Hall during a debate about the unrest, Dutch broadcaster NOS reported.
