What you need to know

  • A dive into the “trial version” of the Google Home app highlighted several strings pointing to compatibility with CO/smoke detectors.

  • Multiple code strings detail alerts to users about their home’s dangerous air quality and sensor testing.

  • More devices have been added to Google Home since Matter support arrived, but its Nest app has been the only way to control its CO/smoke sensors.

Google could have plans to incorporate new sensors that protect users from dangerous air conditions at home.

Google is reportedly developing new sensor support for the Home app, according to a deep dive from AssembleDebug (Android Authority). According to the tipster, several threads in a “test version” of Google Home suggest that the app will implement support for smoke and CO (carbon monoxide) detectors.

This support will reportedly be joined by a series of new alerts sent to the user’s phone. The code displayed warning signs informing users if “smoke levels are too high.” Additional alerts were discovered informing users of the dangerous levels of CO and smoke detected by the sensor and that they should leave the house into “fresh air.”

The Home app will apparently allow users to test their sensors to make sure their functionality is ready.

More importantly, the post points out the existence of smoke and CO sensors created by Google under the name “Nest.” However, consumers who have them can only use their features through the Nest app. It is speculated that the hidden code in the app could indicate an upcoming integration between the Nest app and Google Home. If true, that would eliminate the need for this additional app and put everything under the roof of the Home app.

Consumers are no doubt familiar with the term “Matter,” the new industry connectivity standard for linking smart home devices. In 2022, Google hopped on the Matter train with the Home app, as it implemented support for Home Mini, Hub Max, Wifi Pro and Nest Audio. The company then expanded support for more brands and smart home devices.

It is not specifically mentioned that these air quality sensors will be included in the Matter standard, but it is possible. He Matter update 1.2 includes support for smoke and CO detectors, as the CSA honed in on reducing the number of app “hubs” consumers need to control their devices. Google’s possible inclusion of its smoke and CO sensors is likely inside the Home app, not in a separate Nest app, will continue that “centralized hub” idea.

Unfortunately, without more concrete evidence, it’s unclear if and when Google will implement this. The publication wonders if the company has a “future Nest Protect” in the works for this support, but that’s just speculation for now.
