A man dies after colliding with two vehicles while falling down an embankment in Philippi

PHILIPPI, W.Va (WDTV) – A man was killed in a single-vehicle crash in Philippi Tuesday morning, according to the Philippi Police Department.

Authorities responded to the crash at approximately 8 a.m. near the former Alderson Broaddus University baseball field on Route 119 and found several damaged vehicles.

Police confirmed that the man, who was driving a silver Nissan Frontier, entered the northbound lane, struck a black Ford F-150, backed up and began traveling south before exiting the road to the right and crashing. against a speed limit sign and a mailbox. The man re-entered the road, crashed into a tan Chevy Cruze, crossed the old baseball field, crashed through a fence, struck a tree and rolled approximately 50 to 60 feet down the embankment, police said.

The Philippi Fire Department had to extricate the man from the vehicle and he was taken to Broaddus Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The man’s identity is being withheld at this time until family can be notified, police said.

The Barbour County Sheriff’s Department and West Virginia State Police assisted the Philippi Police Department at the scene.
