Topeka man found guilty of first-degree murder following 2023 homicide case

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – A Topeka man was found guilty of first-degree murder following a 2023 manslaughter case last week.

A Shawnee County jury returned guilty verdicts in District Court case 23CR1834, State v. Jacorey Porter on Friday, November 8.

After a five-day jury trial, the jury found Porter, 24, guilty of the following charges:

  • Count 1: Voluntary manslaughter; Sudden quarrel or passion
  • Count 2: Murder in the first degree; Inherently dangerous felony
  • Count 4: Criminal discharge of a firearm into an occupied dwelling, building or structure; Resulting in great bodily harm
  • Count 5: Aggravated Child Endangering

On September 28, 2023, Topeka Police Officers responded to the 3700 block of SW Park South Ct. about a shooting. When officers arrived at the scene, they made contact with Jacorey Porter, who told them he was involved in the incident and was injured.

Officers detained Porter and moved into the residence, locating Jeremy Palmer lying on his back in the hallway. He was later pronounced dead at the scene. Porter was then transported to the hospital to be treated for his injuries and was then taken to the LEC for further questioning.

Porter was detained prior to his jury trial and will remain in custody until his sentencing at 4 pm on January 8, 2025.

District Attorney Mike Kagay commends Deputy District Attorneys Steve Karrer and Bethany Lee and their trial team for their diligent work in prosecuting this case.

Kagay thanks the officers of the Topeka Police Department for their dedication and the Shawnee County jury for their service.
