Tornado briefly sweeps through northern Oakland County

HOLLY, Michigan. – Oakland County saw a rare November tornado Sunday night.

While officials are still investigating storm damage, the National Weather Service gathered information about the tornado.

Relatively weak tornado, did not last long

According to the National Weather Service, a line of thunderstorms that moved through the Detroit metropolitan area on Nov. 10, 2024, brought a short-lived EF-0 to Holly just before 7 p.m.

Over the course of two minutes, the tornado traveled approximately one mile and had winds reaching 70 mph. At its largest part, it was about 50 meters wide.

Where did he go?

Authorities said it started in a swampy area and traveled northeast to Holly before dissipating near the center of town.

The damage it left

The tornado damaged trees, construction sites, and the exterior of several buildings. Police urged residents to be careful of downed trees and the possibility of downed power lines.

Officials from the Holly Police and Fire Departments. secured dangerous areas. Some areas were blocked off while assessments were carried out.

American Legion Post 149 was directly in the path of the tornado and was closed on Veterans Day due to damage. The ceremonies were held outside.

According to Post 149 of the American LegionThe tornado created a large crack in its south wall that reached the interior of the building. They believe the roof may have briefly detached from its concrete walls, due to the amount of leaves and other debris found inside the building.

Were there any injuries?

No injuries were reported as a result of the tornado and storm damage, according to the Holly Fire Chief.

What to do if you find downed power lines

Always assume downed power lines are live and dangerous.

Stay at least 20 feet away from downed power lines and keep children and pets inside.

You can report downed lines to DTE Energy at 800-477-4747 or Consumers Energy at 800-477-5050.

If you believe the downed power line poses an immediate danger to the public, you should call 911.

Downed live wires may spin, spark, or arc while searching for ground. Energized wires that have found their ground may not move at all or make any sound, but they are still dangerous.
