Missing Ryan Borgwardt: Kayaker from Watertown, Wisconsin, faked his death and left the country, Green Lake County Sheriff’s Office says

GREEN LAKE COUNTY, Wis. — A dramatic turn was revealed in the search for a missing kayaker in Wisconsin, the Green Lake County Sheriff’s Office said.

Ryan Borgwardt of Watertown went missing on August 12 after going on a kayaking trip on Green Lake.

Crews recovered his overturned kayak, his car, a fishing rod, his wallet, his keys and his license.

The sheriff said they became suspicious after police ran Borgwardt’s name a day after she disappeared.

“We don’t know where it is, but it’s not in our lake,” said Green Lake Sheriff Mark Podoll.

An investigation found that Borgwardt had a second passport, replaced a hard drive in his laptop, deleted browsers on the day he disappeared, made inquiries about transferring funds to foreign banks, purchased airline gift cards and took out an insurance policy. life of $375,000.

The sheriff’s office also revealed that it was communicating with a woman in Uzbekistan, a country in Central Asia.

Sheriff Podoll is now asking the father of three to return home to his family.

“It’s really difficult, because they first felt that the father had drowned a day ago. They found out that wasn’t the case,” Sheriff Podoll said.

Bruce’s Legacy, a nonprofit organization that specializes in water searches, said they spent a lot of money searching for the missing husband.

“It’s a little hard to swallow because this required a lot of expense,” said founder Keith Cormican.

Cormican spent 23 days in the water, almost half the time Borgwardt was missing.

He was there when the Borgwardt family learned of the new developments.

“They were very shaken, as you can imagine, very heartbreaking for the family,” Cormican said.

The Green Lake Sheriff’s Office will now work to identify any and all crimes committed and anyone who assisted with those crimes.

The sheriff said they will also seek restitution for search expenses that have been funded by taxpayers.
