The last war in Ukraine: Donald Trump’s “chosen” Secretary of State voted against aid to Ukraine | World news

Peace deal may come at kyiv’s expense as Trump wants to show he can deliver on promises, analyst says

Donald Trump would be willing to pressure Ukraine to agree to a ceasefire deal and show his domestic audience that he can deliver on his promises, a former US military adviser said.

Trump previously promised to quickly end the Ukraine war if he returned to the White House, but did not explain how he would achieve this.

Mark Voyger, former special adviser for Russian and Eurasian affairs to the US military’s commanding general in Europe, told Sky News’ The World that Trump would likely pursue “peace for peace’s sake”.

“In my opinion, I would be willing to pressure Ukraine for peace, not for the sake of justice nor for the sake of restoring Ukraine’s sovereignty and punishing Russian aggression, but rather peace for the sake of peace.” itself, so that it can fulfill what it has promised to its base,” he said.

Any deal proposed when Trump returns to office will likely result from pressure on Ukraine “by threatening to withhold vital aid,” Voyger said, adding that Trump has “no leverage to influence Putin’s behavior.”

When asked if he felt Trump’s incoming presidency was detrimental to the fate of Ukraine, Voyger said yes.

“(Trump) will be more inclined to work with autocrats,” he said. “He has autocratic instincts as a personal trait. He is isolationist… this behavior would damage NATO, transatlantic solidarity and ultimately endanger the pillars of the international order as we know it.”
