Tom Cruise Returns for ‘The Final Reckoning’ in Action-Packed First Footage

The title of Tom Cruise’s eighth “Mission: Impossible” film has finally been revealed, along with the first trailer.

“The Final Reckoning” is now the official title of “Mission: Impossible 8,” which was originally scheduled to be the “Second Part” of 2023’s “Dead Reckoning.” It is scheduled for release on May 23, 2025. The film was originally scheduled for release in 2022, but was delayed several times due to the pandemic and the SAG-AFTRA actors’ strike.

More from Variety

Cruise revealed the title and a poster Monday morning, along with the caption “Every election has led to this.”

In the action-packed trailer, Cruise dives and explores a sunken submarine, flies and falls from a biplane, and runs a lot. It is also revealed that Angela Bassett will return as CIA Director Erika Sloane after her first appearance in “Mission: Impossible – Fallout.”

In “Dead Reckoning,” Cruise’s Ethan Hunt faces off against a dangerous artificial intelligence program called The Entity that seems to predict his every move and could cause disaster if it falls into the wrong hands. After escaping a calamitous train accident at the end of the film, Ethan realizes that The Entity is hiding aboard an old Russian submarine, but an enemy from Ethan’s past named Gabriel (Esai Morales) is also after the trace.

Morales returns for the next film, along with Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Hayley Atwell, Vanessa Kirby, Pom Klementieff, Shea Whigham, Henry Czerny, Greg Tarzan Davis, Mariela Garriga and Indira Varma. Newcomers to the franchise include Hannah Waddingham, Janet McTeer, Holt McCallany, Katy O’Brian, Nick Offerman and Tramell Tillman.

Christopher McQuarrie returns as director and co-writer after directing “Rogue Nation,” “Fallout” and “Dead Reckoning.” He previously collaborated with Cruise on the “Jack Reacher” franchise and on “Top Gun: Maverick.” The screenplay is written by McQuarrie, Bruce Geller and Erik Jendresen. Cruise and McQuarrie are the producers. Chris Brock, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Tommy Gormley, Don Granger and Susan Novick are executive producers with Gina Hallas as co-producer.
