‘I was out there doing my job’: Boynton Beach fire captain details dangerous ocean rescue

A family outing to the beach ended tragically Sunday morning after a teenager drowned.

According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office (PBSO), the teen’s mother and brother were pulled from the water near Gulfstream Park in Boynton Beach with the help of lifeguards, including one who ended up needing help.

“I was just there doing my job and what I had been trained to do. Unfortunately, we were not able to rescue them all,” Boynton Beach Fire Capt. Steven Permenter told CBS12 News on Monday after being released from the hospital.

Captain Permenter, an experienced member of the dive team, said they responded to reports of two children in distress in the water around 7:30 a.m. Sunday.

When Permenter arrived, he immediately rushed to rescue his mother who was struggling in the water.

“The easiest way to put it is that they were beating us up. The sea was quite rough and the rip currents were pushing us out. So, we were trying to do the best we could to make sure it got to shore as quickly as possible,” Captain Permenter said.

It took a team of lifeguards to get the mother out. He was reunited with his other son, who had been rescued safely.

The mother’s 15-year-old boy, identified as Prestyn Smithwas still missing.

“He had swallowed or aspirated some water and was pretty exhausted,” Permenter added.

Permenter became ill after drinking too much water and had to be rushed to a local hospital.

Approximately five hours later, crews finally found Smith unresponsive and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities cannot emphasize enough how important it is to swim only when a lifeguard is on duty.

“It’s a powerful force in the season and rip currents can really take their toll on anyone, even the most avid swimmers, surfers and lifeguards. So be careful when you get in the water,” Permenter warned.

As for Captain Permenter, he has now recovered and is ready to return to work.
