Cosmetic procedures have gained widespread popularity around the world in recent years, with major surgeries such as liposuction, breast augmentation, face lifts and nose reshaping being among the most sought after. While these surgeries offer the opportunity to transform appearance, they also carry risks, sometimes leading to serious complications, physical damage, and even death. One such case has been reported in China, where a woman’s cosmetic surgeries proved fatal and claimed her life less than a week after going under the knife.

The woman, surnamed Liu, from Guigang in southern China’s Guangxi province, visited a clinic in Nanning and allegedly took out a loan of more than 40,000 yuan (approximately Rs 4.6 lakh) to finance her six cosmetic procedures. at a clinic in Nanning, according to the South China Morning Post. Her initial surgeries (a double eyelid procedure and a nose job) were performed during the COVID-19 pandemic, on the afternoon of December 9, 2020.

After a 5-hour session, she underwent liposuction on her thighs, after which the fat was injected into her face and breasts the next morning. The procedure also continued for another five hours. Shortly after the surgeries, Lui was discharged on December 11, the same day she collapsed at the clinic. Emergency efforts were provided and she was transferred to Nanning Second People’s Hospital; However, she was pronounced dead in the afternoon.

According to the report, Liu died of “acute respiratory failure” caused by a pulmonary embolism after the liposuction procedure. He was survived by an 8-year-old daughter and a 4-year-old son. After the tragic event, Liu’s family sued the clinic, asking for compensation of 1.18 million yuan (1.37 million rupees), and on the other side they were only offered 200,000 yuan: “I said they should donate at least one million yuan. For the death of one person, even if we divide the responsibility, it should be at least 500,000 yuan. “I rejected their private agreement and said we should go to court,” her husband said.

Further investigation into the matter revealed that the clinic had all the legal documents to perform the procedure and that the doctors were also legally licensed. Clinic authorities emphasized that Liu was responsible for the risks associated with the surgery. While the court initially found the clinic fully responsible for the death and ordered the compensation demanded by the family, it was later revised to only half of it after the clinic acknowledged only partial responsibility.

The final assessment suggested that while the clinic did not assess the risks, Liu’s own physical condition could also have contributed to his death. According to SCMP, the incident attracted a lot of attention in the country, sparking heated debate over these types of surgical procedures.
