The twisted ending of ‘The Penguin’, explained

The end of HBO the penguin ended on a disturbing note, with the titular villain showing his true colors and completing his rise to Gotham’s criminal throne.

Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti gave spectacular performances as Oz Cobb and Sofia Gigante, the two scheming rivals trying to rule the darkest underbelly of Gotham, leading to Matt Reeves’ upcoming film sequel. batman part 2.

What happened in episode 8 of ‘The Penguin’?

Once again, Oz found himself bound and helpless, enduring Sofia’s mind games. After discovering that Oz’s mother Francis (Deirdre O’Connell) knew that Oz murdered his brothers, Sofia attempted to force Oz to confess to Francis.

Surprisingly, Oz flatly refused to admit the truth, even when Sofia threatened to cut off her mother’s pinky, proving that Oz doesn’t care about his mother as much as he says he does.

For Oz, his own reputation always comes first.

But the psychological breakthrough Sofia was hoping for finally arrives, when Francis tells Oz that she always knew and that she almost had him murdered to avenge the children.

In a deliciously ironic twist, it was Rex Calabrese who was ready to kill young Oz, Rex being the respected gangster that Oz has spent the entire show remembering and trying to emulate.

Oz’s life is a terrible self-inflicted tragedy, in which man longs for the respect of those who despise him and spurns the affection of those who truly care.

After the truth finally comes out, Francis stabs Oz in the stomach with a broken bottle before collapsing, motivating Oz to escape through brute force, carrying his mother on his back. Oz survives and manages to get his mother to the hospital, but faces defeat; The gangs he assembled against Sofía Gigante are turning against him, influenced by Sofía’s best offer.

Worse yet, Oz now understands that his mother does not respect him; In fact, he hates it. But his young protégé, Victor (Rhenzy Feliz) is there to help him with another narrative, assuring Oz that he is the man of the people, the man who restored power to Crown Point and organized an uprising of the petty crime families.

Oz then understands that there is a way to defeat Sofia and the rival gangs, that each gang leader has a second in command who is tired of being pushed around.

Thanks to Zhao’s right-hand man, Link, Oz has a way in and out of the trouble he’s gotten himself into with Sofia.

Oz understands how Link and the rest of his subordinates feel, having spent their lives playing the same role, and convinces them all to participate in a coup, massacring their bosses and restructuring Gotham’s criminal landscape.

Oz also has a narrative for Councilman Hady, offering Sofia as a scapegoat for all the gang violence his scheming has caused.

Hady is just as corrupt as Oz and happily takes credit for Sofia’s capture, with the long-suffering Giant matriarch back behind bars.

How does ‘The Penguin’ end?

Oz successfully rose to the top of Gotham’s criminal underworld; In one scene, we even see him in his trademark top hat and suit.

When Oz and Vic discuss their victory, Vic makes the mistake of opening up to Oz and confessing that he felt like the two of them were family.

Oz then carries out the most brutal murder of the series, strangling Vic to death, before dumping her body in a river. In a darkly funny final touch, Oz steals Vic’s wallet and takes his ID.

Oz understands that being Gotham’s crime boss is not for the faint-hearted and sees Vic’s affections as a point of weakness, an emotional connection that could empower his enemies and complicate business in the future.

Oz is simply not interested in sharing power with a surrogate son, just as he refused to share his mother’s love with his siblings.

While Oz seemed to genuinely care for Vic throughout the series, he actually saw Vic as a useful subordinate, an admirer, someone who gave Oz the respect he so craved.

Vic’s story is the real tragedy here: the boy watched his family die in the Riddler’s flood, then turned down the chance to flee Gotham with his girlfriend and decided to continue his doomed association with Oz.

Vic trusted Oz’s humanity and couldn’t see the monster inside.

As for Sofia, she seems to be getting out of prison faster than one would expect, as in her final scene she opens a letter from Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), who is her half-sister.

Look forward to seeing Sofia again in batman part 2.

Oz concludes his story in the fancy apartment he always wanted, with his mother trapped inside. Francis has suffered a terrible stroke and now cannot tell Oz how she really feels about him: she has been reduced to his pet, like a bird in a cage.

For Oz, this could be the pinnacle of their relationship.

Additionally, Oz still has his girlfriend, sex worker Eve, who willingly disguises herself as his mother for him and provides him with the maternal praise he craves.

The series concludes with the Bat-Signal lighting up the sky over Gotham, meaning the Dark Knight is finally ready to take on the Penguin.

The series showed admirable restraint in keeping Batman out of Oz’s story, but now that the man has shown his worst self, viewers are surely ready to see him take on Batman’s armored fist.

Will there be a second season of ‘The Penguin’?

it’s a possibilitybut not the original intention.

Farrell and Milioti are confirmed to appear in batman part 2but a second season of the penguin would have to take place between the sequel and the third movie the batman trilogy, which could be a bit complicated.

Matt Reeves, director of the batmanhas expressed interest in exploring more Gotham villains through another show, so we could see a character like Scarecrow, Two-Face or even the Joker developed in their own HBO series, and Oz Cobb could very well appear.
