Haiti’s transition council fires interim Prime Minister Conille amid internal power struggle

A transitional council created to restore democratic order in Haiti signed a decree removing interim Prime Minister Garry Conille and replacing him with Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, a businessman who was previously considered for the position.

The nine-member council’s decision, due to be published on Monday, November 11, seeks to remove Garry Conille after just five months in office and replace him with businessman Alix Didier Fils-Aimé.

The bulletin says that the council agreed by consensus on November 8 to remove Conille – a former UN official and academic who was named in May to lead the country as it faces rising gang violence and long-standing political instability.

Conille, 58, reportedly sent a letter to the transition council requesting that the decision not be officially published.

power struggle

Both sides have reportedly been locked in a Power struggle for weeksand the council wants to change the ministers of Justice, Finance, Defense and Health against the wishes of the prime minister.

And Conille this week sent the council a letter requesting the resignation of three of its members accused of corruption.

It is not immediately clear whether the council – whose members represent several political and civil society groups – even has the power to remove Conille.
