Hillsborough County drag racers arrested by cops: FHP

Florida Highway Patrol stopped an alleged street takeover attempt in the University Area of tampa during the weekend.

FHP says the Tampa Police Department obtained information about a planned roadblock in Tampa and responded to several locations on November 8.

Officers found large groups of people and cars mixed together at Busch Blvd. and Florida Ave., Winn Dixie, in Temple Terrace. Crowds of people and cars also gathered at Fletcher Ave. and Bruce B. Downs Blvd.

The raid ended in multiple chases that were captured by the patrol car’s dash cameras.

Officers’ dash cam video captures them separating a group in a shopping plaza at Fletcher Ave. and Bruce B. Downs Blvd. as people run away and several cars speed out of the parking lot.

“It’s very, very dangerous for the community, especially around here, where there are a lot of families with children,” said Norma King, who shops in that plaza.

The cops chased one of those cars onto the main road and the cop appeared to do a PIT maneuver to stop it.

Another chase ended in the parking lot of a Wawa when the police officer appeared to hit the rear bumper of the car to stop it.

People who shop in that plaza say the situation could have been even more dangerous.

“And they shouldn’t be here either because, after all, we have a university here,” said Melka Haliu, who shops in that plaza. “The roads are not made for this.”

FHP says four drivers were charged with felonies and six passengers were charged with street racing and takeover. FHP says the suspects are between 17 and 24 years old and are from Hillsboro County.

“So for kids to be running around here, you know, doing what they’re doing, it’s not safe,” King said. “And the chases, you know, the police chasing them, that just increases the personal danger, personally.”

FHP says officers stopped two other large groups at the Winn Dixie at Temple Terrace and Busch Blvd. and Florida Ave. before any street racing or dangerous driving occurred.

“At the end of the day, it will be someone’s life,” Haliu said.

fox 13 contacted TPD and FHP about the attempted street takeover.

FHP shared its tracking policy, which includes the following guidelines:

When evaluating the need to initiate a pursuit, the member must determine whether the suspect is actively fleeing and eluding a law enforcement officer or has previously committed a forcible felony. Additionally, when determining the appropriateness, speed, and extent of a pursuit, the member must exercise due consideration to ensure that his or her actions are objectively reasonable. In doing so, members will consider the following:

  1. The nature of the crime committed by the suspect, the potential danger to the public if the suspect is not detained immediately, and the possibility of his arrest at a later date.
  2. The existing traffic conditions, road surface and width, weather, visibility, familiarity with the road, type of area (i.e., urban, residential, rural, school zone), type of area that will be encountered if the pursuit were to continue, or any condition that could create additional hazards to traffic or the public.
  3. The limitations and conditions of both the member and the patrol vehicle.
  4. Members will not participate in activities under the following conditions: Emergency equipment or radio is not working properly and an inmate or person in custody occupies your vehicle.

HP says no one was injured during these incidents.
