Who will coach Florida State’s offensive line and wide receivers in the final two games?

The Florida State Seminoles are reshuffling their coaching staff with two games left in a disastrous 2024 season. Over the weekend, the program made the difficult decision to move on from offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Alex Atkins, wide receivers coach Ron Dugans and defensive coordinator Adam Fuller.

The Seminoles have already announced that co-defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Randy Shannon will assume defensive coordinator duties. But with head coach Mike Norvell already calling the plays on offense, who will coach FSU’s offensive line and wide receivers?

On Monday, Norvell revealed his plans for both positions with the team in a timely BYE week. According to the head coach, senior offensive analyst Gabe Fertitta will handle offensive line duties, while graduate assistant Guy Lemonier Jr. will work with the wide receivers. It appears this will be a by-committee approach, as Norvell also mentioned senior offensive analyst Austin Tucker and director of scouting (offense) Rick Stockstill when going into detail about his plans.

“We’re going to work collectively as a team in that regard. Obviously, with Gabe (Fertitta), he took on that role earlier in the season in Alex’s absence, so he’ll continue to be kind of a key piece.” and target there on the O-line, and then at receiver, Guy (Lemonier) will handle the day-to-day stuff,” Norvell said. “He’s been working with that group, but also with Austin Tucker. Obviously we have a great coach in Coach Stockstill who will be able to help us when we are down a couple of coaches. He will be present, involved and helping in most positions, but I also have a lot of experience there.”

“I am very confident in the coaching staff we have and what we will be able to do over the next few weeks,” Norvell continued. “Everyone’s responsibilities, it’s kind of a greater sense of importance because there could be a little more crossover for the guys and making sure that we connect with the players, make sure that we meet them where they are and then obviously do all the necessary things for us to go out and give our best in the next two games.”

Fertitta served as FSU’s offensive line coach for the first three games of the season with Atkins dealing with an NCAA-mandated suspension. He is in his third year with the program and spends most of that time coaching the offensive line with Atkins. Fertitta worked at Louisville before being hired by the Seminoles and has a successful track record as a high school coach.

Lemonier Jr. joined Florida State in 2021 and is in his fourth year with the Seminoles. He worked with Dugans as a graduate assistant during that period. Lemonier Jr. began his coaching career at Howard in 2018.

Tucker has been in Tallahassee for all five of Norvell’s seasons. He has worked multiple positions during his tenure at FSU, including quarterbacks and running backs. Tucker previously worked in northern Alabama.

Stockstill is a member of the FSU Hall of Fame and longtime head coach at Middle Tennessee State. He returned to his alma mater earlier this year as director of offensive scouting, a position that opened after John Garrett became Duke’s General Manager. Stockstill has a wealth of experience and has spent a lot of time with the quarterbacks this year.
