Packaging error follows ‘Wicked’ poster controversy

Previously, the long-awaited film was in the news for another reason: starring Cynthia Erivowho plays green-skinned Elphaba, called a poster altered by a fan “deeply hurtful.”

The fan had altered one of the film’s promotional posters, in which Ariana GrandeGlinda whispers in Elphaba’s ear while her face is hidden by her witch hat. This made the film’s poster, which showed Erivo looking into the camera, look more like the Broadway musical artwork, but Erivo took offense.

“This is the most savage and offensive thing I have ever seen, equal to that horrible AI of us fighting…” Erivo wrote in a Instagram Story above the edited “Wicked” poster. “None of this is funny. None of this is cute. It degrades me. It degrades us.”

Erivo noted that the original poster was an illustration. “I am a real-life human being, who chose to look at you, the viewer, through the barrel of the camera… because, without words, we communicate with our eyes,” he said. “Our poster is a tribute, not an imitation. Editing my face and hiding my eyes is erasing me. And that is deeply hurtful.”
