Lawyers file motions in case of 17-year-old accused of murdering his mother

POLK COUNTY, Fla. (WWSB) – An attorney for the Polk County teen accused of murdering his mother has filed multiple motions in the case.

Collin Griffith was charged with first-degree murder and will be charged as an adult in the death of his mother on Sept. 11, 2024. Deputies say the teen called 911 for help and claimed he and his mother had gotten into an argument. He stated that during this argument, his mother lunged at him with a knife and fell on him, causing a deep stab wound to his neck.

Polk County Fire Rescue responded to the Auburndale home with emergency medical services and deputies from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office also responded. When they arrived at the scene, they pronounced her dead.

Officers asked the teen what had happened and he immediately became uncooperative and asked to speak to an attorney. As the investigation progressed, detectives began to notice inconsistencies between what he had said happened in his 911 call and what was discovered at the scene.

Further details revealed that Griffith was also arrested for the shooting death of his father in Oklahoma in February 2023. The teenager was arrested and charged in this incident, but the charges were later dropped on the grounds of self-defense.

He was also charged with domestic violence assault against his mother in November 2023 by the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office. Detectives spoke with witnesses who told them they saw the teen and his mother outside the residence verbally arguing. They saw him grab his mother by the hair and drag her into the house.

According to these witnesses, his mother repeatedly begged him to “let me go.”

Griffith’s lawyers have now asked to limit information about his father’s death. They have also filed a bail motion in the case.

There will be a status hearing on November 21. Griffith will appear in court to rule on the motions on January 21, 2025.
