Czech tennis player Barbora Krejcikova has publicly criticized “unprofessional” comments made about her physical appearance by prominent tennis journalist Jon Wertheim. The incident took place during the live broadcast of the WTA Finals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, when Wertheim, appearing on the Tennis Channel via video link, made a comment about Krejcikova’s appearance in an apparent attempt of humor. Unaware that the comment was being broadcast, Wertheim commented: “What do you think I am? Barbora Krejcikova. Look at the forehead when Krejcikova and (Zheng Qinwen) come out on the court.” The comment left fans frustrated, with some expressing their disapproval on social media, questioning the lack of professionalism and respect in Wertheim’s statement.

Krejcikova took to social media to respond to the comment, posting a strong message on Twitter (now X) denouncing the incident. “You may have heard of recent comments made on Tennis Channel during coverage of the WTA Finals that focused on my appearance rather than my performance,” Krejcikova wrote. “As an athlete who has dedicated himself to this sport, it was disappointing to see these types of unprofessional comments.”

The former world No. 2 acknowledged that this was not the first time she had encountered comments of this type in the sports media, but she felt compelled to speak out on this occasion. He continued: “This is not the first time something like this has happened in the world of sports. I have often chosen not to speak out, but I think it is time to address the need for respect and professionalism in sports media.”

Krejcikova also expressed concern that these types of comments take away from the essence of the sport, distracting fans from the skill, dedication and resilience that athletes bring to the court. “These moments distract from the true essence of the sport and the dedication that all athletes bring to the field,” he said. “I deeply love tennis and want to see it represented in a way that honors the commitment we make to compete at this level.”

The tennis world has responded with mixed reactions. Many fans expressed their support for Krejcikova and praised her for tackling a topic that has become all too familiar in the sports industry. Others are awaiting a formal response from Wertheim, who, so far, has not commented on the incident.
