New Mississippi Freedom Trail Marker Honors Victoria Jackson Gray Adams

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) – A Mississippi civil rights pioneer who was born in Hattiesburg has been honored by the Mississippi Humanities Council and Visit Mississippi.

On Saturday morning, a Mississippi Freedom Trail marker was unveiled, honoring the late Victoria Jackson Gray Adams.

She was a founder of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party and the first African American woman from Mississippi to run for United States Senator.

“He also worked for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, which was Martin Luther King’s team, and other organizations, such as the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, to help bring about change, not only in Mississippi, but throughout the country.” said John Spann. , Director of Program/Outreach at the Mississippi Humanities Council.

Adams died in Baltimore, Maryland, on August 12, 2006.
