The inside story Author Robert Hardman previously revealed that Charles had cut off his brother financially after Andrew refused to move into the “considerably smaller estate” of Frogmore Cottage. As well as suspending his £1m annual allowance, the king allegedly applied pressure by deciding not to renew Andrew’s “seven figure” security contract.

“At the end of the summer of this year, patience ran out,” Hardman wrote in his book. “The Duke informed the monarch that, regardless of any ultimatum, he would still remain at Royal Lodge. At that time, the Keeper of the Privy Purse (the monarchy’s chief financial officer) was instructed to cut his subsistence allowance.”
