‘Don’t play Wordle,’ striking workers urge puzzle fans | US News

“Don’t play Wordle” is the plea of striking New York Times workers complaining about what they consider unfair labor practices.

The New York Times Tech Guild, which works on things like election content and recipes along with the paper’s popular range of puzzles and website, went on an industrial strike earlier this week.

The union said it had given management “months’ notice” but that ultimately “the company has decided that our members are not worth enough to accept a fair contract and stop engaging in unfair labor practices.”

This meant they left the day before the US presidential election on November 5, a big day for data visualization.

However, perhaps the biggest impact has been that they are asking people not to play games like Wordle and Connections while they are on strike.

On November 4, the guild posted on

The union has launched a “strike-friendly” website with games and recipes for readers.

The guild is made up of more than 600 technology workers, such as software engineers and data analysts, who “build and maintain the critical infrastructure behind The New York Times,” according to the guild’s website.

“We look forward to continuing to work with the Tech Guild to reach a fair contract that takes into account that they are already among the company’s highest-paid individual contributors and that journalism is our top priority,” said Ms. Rhoades Ha.
