A Hong Kong worker died after being hit by a falling crane cage allegedly caused by a machine malfunction at a residential project construction site.

Police said Saturday that the 41-year-old man lost consciousness after being crushed by a cage lift while trying to move items at the Pavilia Farm III site at 1:30 p.m.

Part of his body was crushed by the iron frame of the cage when it fell on him, leaving him unconscious.

Police said preliminary investigations showed that the crane’s cage suddenly failed before falling, trapping the man on the ground while transporting materials.

Rescuers who arrived at the scene took the worker to Prince of Wales Hospital in Sha Tin for emergency treatment, but he was pronounced dead at 2:25 p.m.

Police investigating the cause of the incident have classified the case as an “industrial accident.”

The man was reportedly married with children, ages 6 and 13, in mainland China.
