Toy drive launched to help Isle of Man families at Christmas

A toy drive has been launched to help families struggling financially at Christmas.

The Salvation Army’s annual initiative, which collects toys and donates gifts that are distributed in December, supported 499 children in 2023 with 4,000 items.

Founded in 2004, the organization has collection points at various locations, including its headquarters on Ballacotier Crescent in Braddan.

Isle of Man church co-leader Captain Rachael Nieuwoudt said Christmas was a time when “financial concerns” came to the fore.

He said the cost of living continued to have a “devastating impact” on families who could not afford to heat their homes or put a nutritious meal on the table.

Helping parents give a gift eases financial pressures and “helps bring the joy of Christmas into their homes,” she said.

Other drop-off points for gift donations include Isle of Man Bank and The Entertainer branches in the Strand shopping center until November 30.

There will also be collection boxes in the lobby of Noble’s Hospital, Garaghyn Glass on the grounds of Noble’s Hospital, Ramsey Cottage Hospital, the Western Wellbeing Center in Peel and the Southern Wellbeing Center in Port Erin until December 6.

Nieuwoudt said this year’s appeal was intended to “bring a little respite to those who struggle the most.”

Gifts, which must be new, may include educational toys, bath toys, books, dolls, action figures, sports equipment, toiletries, makeup, gloves, scarves, hats, hair accessories and chocolates, and must be new.
