Borderlands Movie Failed at the Box Office, Why Company CEO Still Says It “Didn’t Hurt” the Franchise

After years of seemingly every movie based on a video game franchise that is varying degrees of terribleIt seemed as if we had entered a kind of golden age. Between films like box office winner The Super Mario Bros. movie and the Sonic the hedgehog movies, even television adaptations such as the last of us and radioactive dustIt really seemed like Hollywood discovered the secret sauce for making game adaptations that were, at worst, entertaining and, at best, really good. Then he borderlands the movie happened.

borderlands was destroyed by critics and not welcomed by the public. The film was a real failure at the box office and had everything bad about video game adaptations. Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of borderlands game developer Gearbox Software, recently supported IGN that the movie was bad, but says that the film’s failure didn’t “harm” anything. Obviously that movie was disappointing. That said, it actually sold more of the catalog. So, I don’t think it hurt at all, if anything I think it may have helped a little. It highlights something I’ve talked about many times: the difficulty of bringing our intellectual property to another medium.
