Postal worker honored for saving man’s life on route

STANFORD, Ky. (WKYT/Gray News) – A U.S. Postal Service carrier is being called a hero for helping save a man’s life.

Mail carrier Connie Durbin was recognized Friday with the Postmaster General’s Hero Award.

In July, Durbin was on a road trip through Lincoln County when he heard someone calling for help. He later discovered Kevin Stamper in a ditch with his lawnmower on top of him.

Stamper said no one heard his calls for help until Durbin suddenly appeared. He said his actions helped save his life.

“I was lying there and said, ‘Lord, if you don’t send an angel very soon, I don’t think I can last much longer. And I mean within five minutes, she stopped,” Stamper said.

Durbin added: “I wasn’t expecting anything. I didn’t do it. But maybe God put me there for a reason. Maybe I ran early that day for some reason.”

Stamper said he and his wife had returned early from vacation and their mail was still on hold that day, so it was notable that Durbin even stopped because there was no mail for them.
