Stark County Sheriff’s Inspector Faces OVI Charges

Jackson Township, Ohio (WOIO) – A local sheriff’s inspector is in trouble. Police say he got behind the wheel while drunk. He now faces criminal charges.

Jackson Township police body camera footage shows officers struggling with a man who appears to be intoxicated.

According to police, the handcuffed mystery man is Stark County Sheriff’s Inspector William Jones.

He now faces OVI charges. Sheriff’s Office officials told 19 News that Jones has been an employee since 2016 and is currently on administrative leave.

“This guy here was in the Jeep but he tried to abandon it because he was drunk,” a witness said.

According to witnesses, he was behind the wheel of a Jeep Wrangler on Wednesday night around 7:45 pm. That’s when he crashed into another car at the intersection of Dressler Rd NW and Belden Village St NW in Canton.

A woman who says she was with Jones told police she was the owner of the car but was a passenger during the crash.

A police report obtained by 19 News states: “When officers asked William what had happened, he stated that he does not answer questions.”

Jones boldly requested to call Sheriff George Maier.

“Call Jorge! I know George was on his re-election campaign,” Jones shouted in the body camera footage.

After his arrest, officers took Jones to a Jackson Township secure facility, where he refused to cooperate and give a breath sample, according to police.

Jones was eventually handed over to a sober driver. He is scheduled to appear in court on November 13.
