‘I just ran toward the bus’: Witness recounts helping passengers in deadly bus crash on I-490

The News10NBC team details breaking news, traffic and weather.

CHILI, NY – The bus crash on I-490 in Chili is now a fatal accident investigation after the most seriously injured passenger died Thursday night after hours of surgery, the County Sheriff’s Office said. Monroe.

The sheriff’s office has not released the name of the passenger who died or the bus driver. The driver received four tickets, including one for driving while fatigued.

News10NBC investigative reporter Berkeley Brean hosted section 490 in Chili on Friday. He saw the skid marks of cars and trucks slamming on their brakes behind the bus. And the road scratch marks from the bus after it overturned. The bus skidded almost 200 meters before stopping.

Sheriff Todd Baxter talked about all the people stuck in traffic behind the bus who became first responders. Cameron Austin was one of them, returning home from the gym behind a tractor-trailer.

“And then all of a sudden everyone was slamming on the brakes,” Austin said. “Because I turned next to the truck and saw the bus from the side.”

“I didn’t even call 911. I just ran to the bus,” Austin said. “I remember helping a boy. His legs were through the hatch and he fell backwards. “I remember grabbing his right leg and pulling him out and down so he could sit on the bus and slide off.”

Sheriff Baxter praised the efforts of people like Austin who stopped to help people who were dazed, seriously injured and far from home. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office sent a letter of thanks to the community for their response to the crash.

The bus driver was cited for driving while fatigued, unsafe speed, unsafe lane change and failure to wear a seat belt. Now that someone was dead, Berkeley asked the sheriff’s office if that made any difference.

He also asked the sheriff’s office for the driver’s name and if we should appear in Chili Municipal Court to file more charges. The response he got was that they have shared everything they can share publicly and that they are still investigating.
