Denver extends cold weather shelter hours during winter storm

Denver is extending its cold-weather shelter hours through Saturday morning to protect homeless residents from an ongoing winter storm.

The shelter will be available until 11 a.m. Saturday at the Stone Creek shelter, located in the repurposed Best Western hotel at 4595 Quebec St., as well as at the city facility located at 2601 W. 7th Ave. and 375 S. Zuni St.

“The cold weather poses a serious danger to people who are unsheltered, and the city encourages people to come inside,” the city and county of Denver said in a news release.

Thornton city leaders will also open a warm shelter Friday night at Carpenter Recreation Center11151 Colorado Blvd., 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Saturday.

Other Denver shelters that have also increased capacity during the cold weather include the Denver Rescue Mission for single men, 2222 Lawrence St.; Samaritan House for single women, 2301 Lawrence St.; and Urban Peak for youth ages 15 to 20, 1630 S. Acoma St.
