California warns against intoxicating hemp foods and drinks that attract children

California warns against intoxicating foods and drinks containing hemp, a form of cannabis, that are designed to attract children.

Hemp is supposed to have low amounts of THC, the psychoactive active ingredient in marijuana, but the California government said products designed to look like Cheetos, Fruity Pebbles and Sour Patch Kids may contain intoxicating levels of the drug.

“Industrial hemp-infused products designed to resemble popular brands appeal to the most vulnerable (children and adolescents) and pose serious adverse health risks that we must protect them from,” said California Attorney General Rob Bonta. said on friday.

These hemp food and beverage products are often sold at gas stations, tobacco shops, and liquor stores, and are advertised in language such as “medicated,” “THC,” and “CBD.”

People who consume the products may experience effects such as shortness of breath, lethargy, dizziness, nausea, and loss of coordination, and side effects of synthetic cannabinoids include tachycardia, agitation, vomiting, difficulty breathing, and psychosis, among others.

In September, California Governor Gavin Newsom issued emergency regulations that industrial hemp food, beverage and dietary supplement products have no detectable THC per serving, cannot be sold to anyone under 21 years of age, and are no more than five servings per package.
