SALT LAKE CITY – Salt Lake City Police announced the arrest of a 58-year-old man after he assaulted people in Liberty Park and pointed a BB gun that looked like a real firearm at 5 people.

According to court documents obtained by FOX 13 News, the incident occurred on Thursday at 2:45 p.m. Officers say the suspect, Rafael Manzanilla Perez, 58, was approaching people in the park and punched a man with his fist before brandishing a gun and pulling it out.

Witnesses told police that Perez pointed the firearm at 5 people, yelling at them in a language the witnesses did not understand. Witnesses then tackled the suspect and took his gun and a knife.

When officers arrived, they detained Pérez. They say he originally tried to give them a false date of birth, so they had to identify him through police records.

Perez could face five counts of aggravated assault and one count of providing false information to a law enforcement officer.
