Panel says VAR was wrong to intervene on United penalty at Hibs

Dundee United should not have been awarded the penalty that earned them a draw against Hibernian on Saturday, according to the Scottish FA’s key match incident review panel.

Three of the five panel members thought VAR (video assistant referee) Greg Aitken “incorrectly intervened to suggest” an on-field review.

With the hosts leading thanks to a Lewis Miller header in the first half, United defender Emmanuel Adegboyega fell to the ground after having his shirt pulled by two Hibs players when a free kick was taken into the penalty area with a minute remaining of regulatory time.

Referee Colin Steven did not call a foul, but after being directed to the monitor, he sent off Hibs striker Mykola Kuharevich for a second yellow card and awarded the penalty with which Sam Dalby equalized.
