Emergency measures in Amsterdam due to attacks on Israeli football fans after the tearing down of Palestinian flags | World news

The mayor of Amsterdam has announced a series of emergency measures in the city after “anti-Semitic” rioters attacked Israeli football fans, adding that she is “furious” about events in her city.

Femke Halsema said at a press conference: “This is a very dark time for the city, for which I am deeply ashamed. Anti-Semitic criminals attacked and assaulted visitors to our city, in hit-and-run actions.”

The emergency measures apply to Amsterdam and the southern suburbs of Amstelveen.

Police will be able to carry out additional searches and there is now a ban on protests and face coverings. Buildings that could be attacked will be protected.

Previously, images shared on social media showed Maccabi Tel Aviv fans tearing down Palestinian flags in central Amsterdam. Anti-Arab chants were also heard.

Officers later arrested 62 people in the Dutch capital following disorder following a soccer match between Ajax and the Israeli team.

Five people were taken to hospital after violence when the two teams clashed at the Johan Cruyff Arena, with Ajax winning 5-0.

Israel initially said it planned to send military planes to Amsterdam to bring fans home, before deciding to send two commercial planes.

Other videos show a crowd running through the streets and a man being beaten.

Authorities said at this morning’s press conference that 10 of the 62 people arrested are still in police custody. Two of those who remain detained are minors, they added. The five injured fans have already left the hospital.

A statement issued by Amsterdam police and prosecutors said the evening “was very turbulent with several incidents of violence directed at Maccabi supporters.”

“In several places in the city, supporters were attacked,” the statement said.

“The police had to intervene several times, protecting Israeli supporters and escorting them to hotels. Despite the massive police presence in the city, Israeli supporters were injured.

“This outbreak of violence against Israeli supporters is unacceptable and cannot be defended in any way.

“There is no excuse for the anti-Semitic behavior exhibited last night by rioters who actively sought out Israeli supporters to attack and assault them.”

The first arrests occurred hours before the match, as Israeli fans gathered in the city center.

Further arrests followed at a planned demonstration against the arrival of the Tel Aviv team players, and after the match, when some attacked Israeli fans.

Dutch police said they were aware of reports of a possible hostage situation, but had no confirmation that it had actually happened. They said that several people who were missing have already been found.

Maccabi Tel Aviv supporters had gathered at Dam Square the afternoon before the match, and around 10 people were arrested for criminal offences, including disorderly conduct, police said.

Meanwhile, a planned pro-Palestinian demonstration took place in Anton de Komplein Square, about a 15-minute walk from the Johan Cruyff Arena. Local authorities had prohibited the organizers from holding the demonstration at the site.

Part of this group tried to reach the ground, but were stopped by riot police, who threw fireworks at them, the force said.

About 30 people were arrested in or near the stadium, most of them for disturbing public order and carrying or lighting fireworks, the statement added.

Police said fans left the stadium without incident after the game, but clashes were reported in the city center overnight.

Ugly scenes resurfaced the worst memories of anti-Semitism in Europe

The scenes in Amsterdam on Thursday night were extremely ugly: Israeli soccer fans were chased, beaten and kicked to the ground.

Some videos allegedly show fans being detained and forced to show their passports.

The worst memories of anti-Semitism in Europe resurface, especially when it occurred around the anniversary of Kristallnacht, the Night of Broken Glass, when the Nazis unleashed a series of pogroms against Jews in 1938.

Senior Israeli politicians have denounced last night’s violence as an organized pogrom and called on Dutch authorities to arrest those responsible. 62 people have already been arrested.

The Dutch prime minister has said the attacks were “completely unacceptable.”

There had been tension in the early afternoon. Videos circulating on social media, verified by Sky News, show Maccabi Tel Aviv fans tearing down Palestinian flags and chanting anti-Arab slogans before the match.

There are also reports that Israeli fans booed in the stadium during a minute of silence for the victims of the Valencia floods.

The Israeli military has confirmed that it will no longer send rescue flights to Amsterdam as originally announced by Benjamin Netanyahu, but Israeli carriers have been given permission to fly on Shabbat tonight, if necessary.

Israel’s new Foreign Minister Gideon Saar is also reportedly heading to the Dutch city to meet with officials there.

Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said Friday morning that the israeli prime minister had been informed of the details of “a very violent incident” in Amsterdam.

IsraelThe Ministry of National Security urged its citizens in the Dutch city to stay in their hotels, the prime minister’s office added.

Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, said she is “outraged by last night’s vile attacks” in a post on X.

“I strongly condemn these unacceptable acts,” he added. “Anti-Semitism has absolutely no place in Europe. And we are determined to fight all forms of hate.”
