Queensbury Lodge and Stables in Newmarket to be restored

Authorities were forced to intervene and carry out urgent works in November 2020, when fears arose that the building could collapse.

Then, in 2023, planning chiefs granted Unex Group outline planning permission to build up to 123 homes, provided the hostel was restored first.

“Our ambition has always been the restoration of Queensbury Lodge Yard,” said Jim Thorndyke, cabinet member for planning at West Suffolk Council.

“We have been working with Unex-appointed construction specialists to provide advice and support so that applications for restoration can be submitted.

“I am delighted and look forward to seeing the owners progress the plan soon.”

A spokesperson for Unex stated that the group is satisfied “to have worked in collaboration” with the city council.

They said: “Several housebuilders have approached Unex interested in delivering the much-needed 123 residential units.

“Whilst Unex’s intention is to carry out the restoration works on the listed buildings as soon as possible, we will be seeking tenders for these works now that the scope of what is required has been agreed.”
