Scotland field Jordan at full-back against South Africa

Tom Jordan will make his first start for Scotland against world champions South Africa at Murrayfield on Sunday.

Star duo Finn Russell and Blair Kinghorn return, along with scrum-half Ben White, having been unavailable for last weekend’s 57-17 win over Fiji.

New Zealand-born Jordan, usually deployed as a flyhalf for Glasgow Warriors, impressed as a substitute full-back in that match and remains there.

Darcy Graham is lost after a concussion, and Kinghorn takes his place on the wing.

Ali Price and Adam Hastings retire, with Jamie Dobie remaining as the back-up number nine option.

Last fall, the Springboks began their successful World Cup defense with a stifling 18-3 victory over Scotland.

“It’s the biggest challenge in world rugby right now,” Scotland coach Gregor Townsend said.

“They are double world champions and are in fantastic form. They won the Rugby Championship and have been able to play against different teams and show that their depth is very strong.”

Eben Etzebeth captains South Africa while Siya Kolisi starts on the bench.

Locks Franco Mostert and RG Snyman return after long absences due to injuries, the former as a starter and the latter on the bench.

With number eight Kwagga Smith making his 50th cap in Edinburgh, coach Rassie Erasmus has made 11 changes from the team that defeated Argentina in September.

“When you think of the Springboks, you think of the physicality, but there is an extra dimension,” Townsend added. “They are very innovative in set pieces and move the ball quickly.

“We expect an open match that will test us every minute.”

Scotland have beaten South Africa just five times in 29 meetings, the last of those victories coming in 2010.
