Truro City enjoying ‘remarkable’ homecoming, says boss John Askey

Truro City manager John Askey says the club’s recent form has been “remarkable”.

The Tinners are second in the National League South and are on a seven-game unbeaten run after Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with Chippenham Town.

More than 2,800 people attended the match at Truro City’s new stadium, a record attendance since it opened in August.

“You couldn’t ask for more from the performances the players are putting in,” Askey told BBC Radio Cornwall.

“We have a very, very limited team, limited resources and it is remarkable what is happening at the football club.

“You can see off the field how the city is supporting us, and that was shown with 2,800 spectators on a Tuesday night when there is Champions League football.”

Bad weather at their temporary grounds forced Truro to play 13 games in the final 28 days of last season, finishing the campaign in 16th place.

They lost manager Paul Wotton to rivals Torquay United during the summer when they finally returned to Cornwall after almost four years away, having sold their old ground.

They replaced Wotton with Askey, who previously led York City to promotion from the northern version of the sixth tier and also took charge of Port Vale, Shrewsbury Town and Macclesfield Town in the English Football League.

He appears to have galvanized a team to the highest position it has ever held in the English football pyramid.

“I think everyone can see things are happening at the football club,” Askey added.

“We want to try and take this club as far as we can, the ultimate goal is obviously to try and get into the football league.

“We will need a lot of resources to do it, but that is the goal.

“Hopefully we can attract investment, and if we do, the club will only go in one direction: forward.

“So we’re still trying to improve the structure, but it’s very important that everyone supports us, really all of Cornwall, because it would be fantastic if we could do something this season.”
