UPDATE: During a news conference Thursday night, firefighters said damage assessment teams had so far found 132 structures, mostly homes, destroyed and 88 damaged. So far 298 properties have been verified.

ORIGINAL STORY:

The mountain fire has burned some houses to the ground in the Camarillo Heights area and in other places.

But as of Thursday morning, authorities refused to give even a rough estimate of how many structures have been lost or damaged.

During a news conference at the Ventura County Fairgrounds, Firefighter Andy VanSciver, spokesman for the Ventura County Fire Department, said 10 damage assessment teams were being deployed for the count.

“They will go through every street and every property and do an analysis of every outbuilding and every house, and give us a report on it,” VanSciver told reporters Thursday. “That’s going to take some time.”

Firefighters want to “do it right the first time,” he said, and notify affected homeowners.

Crews will go door-to-door to assess structural damage.

The fire broke out shortly before 9 a.m. Wednesday on South Mountain, among livestock properties in the Somis area. Strong gusts of Santa Ana wind pushed it southwest toward the Saticoy Hills. By 11:30 a.m., he had crossed Highway 118 into the Camarillo Heights neighborhood, about 2.5 miles away, where large homes surround several golf courses in and around Camarillo.

The fire grew to more than 14,000 acres by Wednesday night and spread north toward Santa Paula. Late Thursday morning, it was mapped at 19,643 acres as New road closures and evacuation orders. were announced.

Ventura County Fire Capt. Trevor Johnson, chief of fire operations, said during the news conference that the damage assessment process is “delicate,” noting that crews must check everything.

“I don’t have any ballpark or any kind of estimate on that, but it will be released in the next few days,” Johnson said.
