TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – A Toledo teen accused of beating a man to death will remain locked up at the Lucas County Juvenile Justice Center.

The prosecutor presented the paperwork to begin the process for the teenager to be tried as an adult and this case has taken some twists and turns.

“You committed adult crimes, so you should be punished to the maximum,” said the victim’s sister, Quillistine Brown.

Curtis Marshall’s family said what happened at his brother’s house didn’t make sense.

“Yesterday we had a funeral for my brother. He had many years to live and they were taken away from him. So I’m very, very upset,” said his sister Sheronda Davis.

Ronnie Kanavel, 21, and another 15, are facing murder charges accused of stomping and beating Marshall to death.

It happened at the victim’s home on Licking Street. The 15-year-old will remain locked up. The juvenile prosecutor presented court documents to begin the process for the teenager to be tried as an adult.

“His lawyer asked the court for a competency hearing yesterday. She is concerned about whether he is competent to present himself not only as an adult but as one,” said Patricia Wardrop, deputy chief prosecutor of the Count Lucas Juvenile Division.

A doctor will evaluate you and present a ruling to the court. The victim’s family wants justice.

“If he is able to cut the monitor from his leg. He’s capable of making all these other decisions and committing crimes and other things in life. He made decisions. He knew what he was doing. He is not incompetent. “He is competent and should be tried as an adult,” Davis said.

Police said the teen was with Ronnie Kanavel when Marshall was attacked.

According to court records, Demarcus Marshall Sr. was seen behind the family’s home pointing a gun at the residence.

Police stopped him as he left the area and a gun was found inside his car.

“Everything he did was because he was hurt. He is not a bad person. He was someone who broke because he lost his father. I’m sure he would never hurt them like that. You committed adult crimes, so you should be punished to the maximum,” Davis said.

Ronnie Kanavel will face a judge on Friday.
